Flood plain archaeology: the excavation of Hemington Fields

Abstract:
Continual fluvial reworking of the early Holocene gravels of the River Trent has provided evidence for many wooden structures which once stood upon or near it. These include the three medieval bridges, a mill dam and race, numerous fishweirs, a cargo of quernstones, part of a Mercian cross shaft and other Saxon and Roman stonework, and the recent discovery of a fourth medieval bridge.
