Malton, east of Java

Abstract:
Excavations were carried out at the church of St Leonard and St Mary, Malton; a sensitive area as the cemetery had been in heavy use from around 1650 until the end of the last century. Medieval deposits had been badly disturbed by the graves as had the Roman evidence, which included a cobbled surface, an ash filled feature and various cuts which may have been part of a hypocaust. Painted plaster and tiles from this area suggest it was a high status building during the third and fourth centuries AD. AR
