Abstract:
The documentary sources for the burh established at Halwell by King Alfred are assessed and a territory whose estates were responsible for its support is proposed. The local landscape of the burh is examined with respect to estate organisation and communications. It is demonstrated that these local findings apply to the wider territory and that the burh at Halwell occupies a logical and strategically significant site for the defence of the South Hams region in the Late Saxon period.
