Abstract:
Traces the history of the use of limestone in the area, particularly as an agricultural aide to neutralise soil acidity, from Romano-British times onwards. There are details of lime extraction practices (quarries), kilns, associated machinery, use of fuels, transport, trade, and other uses of the finished product. This survey adds five sites to previous reconnaisance work, and there is a list of the sixteen quarry and limekiln sites in the area covered. Holroyd, Isabel
