Abstract:
Article discussing possible locations for the source of the 'unaker' clay mixture mentioned in the patent filed by Heylyn and Frye in 1744, prior to the establishment of the experimental New Canton site which was the precursor to the Bow manufactory. The authors examine mineralogical, chemical and documentary evidence for a possible origin for this clay in North America, for its use in the production of 'A'-marked porcelain, and for the association of this porcelain with the Heylyn and Frye 1744 patent, including discussion of circumstantial evidence for the linking role of the North American potter Andrew Duché.
