Abstract:
The paper examines the development of Westwell village around the demesne farm belonging to Christ Church Priory, using the evidence given in the Welles bedel rolls and in the Memorandum Book of Henry Eastry, prior from 1285. It attempts to discover the original site of the manor, and considers the evidence offered by the churches, mills and other topographical features; it also examines the contribution made by the archaeological dig undertaken in 1999.
