Abstract:
Found in areas where soft granite can be dug out to form a cave-like structure, hulls occur in four basic plan-types, are usually sited in farmyards and have doorjambs and doors. They were domestic or farm stores providing constant temperature for dairy produce, root vegetables or contraband. They differ from fogous in having only one entrance and a roof of native rock. They are also known on Dartmoor, and close parallels occur in Brittany; most are of 18th-19th century date, but some could be as early as 16th century.
