A synthetic appraisal of European development during this period. Based primarily on the archaeological record it illustrates the contribution material remains can make to a period apparently well attested in historical sources. However it is cautioned that archaeology also generates its own frameworks for comparison and interpretation, ones which may not apply to other contexts or past reality. IH
