Abstract:
Resulting from the 1989 exhibition of the Museum of London's jewellery collection this catalogue brings together papers from the Museum's specialists as well as independent experts. The first section The jewellery trade in London comprises John Clark's (8-11) appraisal of craftsmanship during the 'Saxon and medieval' periods, Tessa Murdoch's (12-17) paper concerning developments 'From the late fifteenth century to 1800' and 'The nineteenth century' by Chris Ellmers (18-25). Section two, Symbol and association in London jewellery opens with 'Romano-British jewellery' by Christine Jones (28-37) which explores the style and composition of the jewellery and its potential to reflect cultural and economic trends. Charlotte Gere (38-49) deals with jewellery 'From the fifteenth century to the Victorians' including inscriptive and documentary evidence that specifies the symbolic meaning of various stones and stone combinations, whilst 'From the Middle Ages to the Victorians' by Valerie Cumming (52-61) looks at evidence for the relationship between dress and jewellery. Tessa Murdoch (64-9) begins the final section Catalogue: jewellery in London from pre-Roman times to the 1930s with a paper on the 'Origins of the jewellery collection' followed by the catalogue itself which is divided into sections 1-10 and 11a-11e. These concern 'Death, mourning and memento mori' (70-9), 'Beliefs' (80-91), 'Symbols of love' (92-100), 'Dress accessories' (I (101-11) and II (112-19)), 'Royal association' (120-7), 'Social status' (128-33), 'Portraits in jewellery' (134-5), 'Cameos in jewellery' (136-9), 'Souvenirs and novelties' (140-7), 'Flowers in jewellery' (148-53), and 'Manufacturing' sections concerning metals (154-60), enamel (161-5), glass (166-73), other materials (174-8), and the retail trade (179). There are two appendices, 'Posy ring inscriptions' (180-1) and 'Gem-testing' by Alan Jobbins (182-3) and a glossary. IH
