Infra-red thermography in building survey and recording An application at Prior's Hall, Widdington, Essex

Abstract:
Infra-red thermography was deployed on the surviving west cell of the Anglo-Saxon structure, in order to reveal structural elements beneath the surface rendering that might inform the interpretation of the building's function and status. After render-stripping work, a largely complete gable-headed doorway was found in the predicted position, demonstrating the technique's effectiveness. It is suggested that, if weather conditions were favourable, the survey of the four elevations of a simple church could be completed in less than an hour by thermography. Wallace, Colin
