Abstract:
A cultural heritage desk-based assessment was completed on the site of a proposed opencast coal site. There were no known features of cultural heritage interest within the site, other than a small group of infilled pits or shafts of unknown date, but a number of features within the vicinity indicated that the area was occupied during the Romano-British and medieval periods. Most notably there was cropmark evidence of Romano-British settlement within 70m of the site, to the north. However, immediately to the south-west of the site was Prestwick Carr, an extensive area of alluvial wetland that was drained in the mid 19th century. The proximity of the site to this wetland, as well as its topography, suggested that although Romano-British settlement was nearby, the site was unlikely to have been an attractive position for settlement. The potential for the presence of significant unknown features of cultural heritage interest was therefore considered to be low, though not non-existent. A SAM and a listed building were located approximately 500m from the site to the east and north respectively. No effects on these associated with the development were anticipated. There was a hedgerow within the site and another forming the south-western boundary which may be considered as 'important' under the Hedgerows Regulations, and these could be affected by development. Both of these represented historic (pre-1850) township boundaries, though they were not on modern parish boundaries. Appropriate mitigation of any effects on these could involve restoration of any sections of such hedgerows which could not be retained in the development. [Au(abr)]
