Abstract:
A single 3m by 10m trench was excavated across the site in response to a condition upon planning consent. The archaeological remains were fairly limited in nature and character, although they appeared to extend over much of the area of the proposed development. Overlying natural waterlain sands was a layer that had evidently been ploughed and which contained a variety of domestic waste. The pottery recovered from the deposit was all post-medieval; however, if no large scale post-medieval terracing had occurred then it was probable that this layer represented the natural land surface from prehistoric times (attested by one struck flint) onwards. A number of walls, for buildings seen on the 1864 Ordnance Survey, were revealed which, due to the depth of subsequent 19th century dumping stratigraphy, did not cut the earlier levels. [Au(adp)]
