Abstract:
An archaeological investigation was carried out immediately to the rear of Shakespeare's Birthplace, where a doorway was to be re-opened and paths relaid as part of a re-organisation of visitor access. The Birthplace and its neighbouring properties were probably laid out in 1196; the original part of the existing building dated from the later 16th or early 17th century. During the excavation, a post-medieval cellar cutting a late 15th-early 16th century pit was recorded, and a probable 18th century cess pit was observed. Residual 13th century pottery and an undated post hole were found. All above ground remains of outbuildings shown on 19th century plans were found to have been removed in the course of mid-19th century restoration. An area of floor boards was lifted within the house, to investigate whether any trace of a partition wall along the side of a former cross passage had survived. No trace of the partition base remained. [Au(adp)]
