Abstract:
A survey of a bell frame within a church tower was undertaken prior to the replacement of the frame. The tower was built in the 13th century, and the church was known to have had bells in the medieval period, although the number of these was not known. Documentary records had survived for the casting, re-casting and re-hanging of bells in post-medieval times. The two largest bells were cast in 1664, whilst the most recent was added in 1924. Details of the beams of the bell-frames were recorded, and evidence of the former roping of the bells was observed. Evidence of repairs and alterations was also noted. It was concluded that the most likely period for the construction of the bell frame was c. 1660-80. [AIP]
