Abstract:
The Littondale Survey in its third year undertook excavations at Halton Gill. The settlement is interpreted as comprising three or four sunken huts arranged around a spring, below which are two main lynchets. A trackway gives access to the site. Aerial photograph analysis appears to indicate that the lynchets and trackway are later than the overall field systems. The main hypothesis is that the field systems existed in the 1st century AD, with the settlement developing over the next three centuries. In addition to the excavations, survey work was carried out on Fountains Fell coke oven, a series of lime-kilns in the area, and a hut circle on Comb Scar, Malham. AIP
