Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of engineers' test trenches, at the site of a 19th century barracks which had been constructed in two stages. A garden soil containing brick and tile fragments and a sherd of 19th century pottery was recorded, which may have represented a soil within the grounds of the earlier phase of the barracks. Observations confirmed that the barracks had been constructed in a substantial terrace levelled into the slope of the hill. The medieval defences of Taunton were thought to have lain along the northern edge of the site, but no evidence for their line was observed. [AIP]
