Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that isolated prehistoric occupation, an extensive Roman settlement and possible Saxon settlement had been recorded close to the site. Elements of medieval buildings fronting the High Street, along with historic property boundaries, survived within Staines, and two historic mill sites lay in the area. Part of the proposal site was thought to have a potential for palaeoenvironmental evidence. It was noted that previous development of the area would have had an impact on buried deposits, but that the site nonetheless had a high archaeological potential. An evaluation was recommended. [AIP]
