Abstract:
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development was undertaken. No prehistoric finds or sites had been recorded in the surrounding area, although Roman artefacts had been found at one site. Settlements were known to have existed in the area by the 11th century AD, and a mill had been established to the west of the site by 1233. A tannery was established on the site itself in the 16th century or possibly earlier; the last tannery was closed in 1988, and the buildings were later gutted by fire. It was concluded that the site was contaminated, and that modern buildings were likely to have severely impacted any underlying remains, although some evidence relating to the tanning industry could have survived. A photographic survey and an archaeological evaluation were recommended. [AIP]
