Abstract:
A desk-based study, supported by a survey of farm buildings, was undertaken to assess the archaeological impact of proposed development. Two groups of cropmarks were identified; the first comprised a complex group incuding a sub-rectangular enclosure, an irregular enclosure and boundary features partly defined by double ditches, partly by single ditches and partly by pit alignments; the second comprised a series of small square and rectangular enclosure possibly representing Iron Age square barrows. A Bronze Age barrow cemetery lay to the south of the proposal area. Fieldwalking recovered evidence of prehistoric activity (Mesolithic through to Bronze Age date) and thin scatters of Roman and Early and Late Medieval pottery. It was also suggested that old river channels within the proposal area could contain deposits or features of archaeological potential. [AIP]
