Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out as part of an environmental assessment for the Tempsford Overbridge Scheme. The route of the main link road affected a moated enclosure which was subsequently investigated means of an earthwork survey, geophysical survey, trial trenches and boreholes as well as documentary research. The earliest domestic settlement dated from the Saxo-Norman period. The construction and initial occupation of the moat dated to the 12th-13th centuries. The excavation of the moat severely disturbed the earlier settlement. The ceramic assemblage suggested that occupation ceased in the 15th century. [Au(abr)]
