Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of two proposed development sites identified that no archaeological remains had been recorded within the boundaries of either site. A Romano-British settlement had been excavated to the north-west, and the site of a possible Anglo-Saxon settlement lay nearby. The core of the early settlement lay in close proximity to the Coal Research Establishment (CRE), archaeological sites in the vicinity including two former moated manor houses, a mid-12th century church and a series of earthwork enclosures. Settlement to the north-west of the Wincanton Dairy site was largely post-medieval in date, and was located within former open fields. Archaeological evaluation of the CRE site was recommended, due to the possible proximity of a medieval manor. [AIP]
