Abstract:
As the result of an archaeological condition on the planning permission for the redevelopment of former farm buildings The Heritage Network was commissioned by the developer to provide a record of the farm buildings, and to monitor the groundworks for the development. The present farmstead was built in c.1880 to replace an earlier farm that had been destroyed by a fire in 1865. The plan of the buildings was a development of the model farms that were being constructed from the late 18th century onwards. No significant archaeological features or deposits were encountered during the fieldwork phase. It appeared that the farmyards were regularly maintained and this may well have removed all evidence of earlier activity on the site. One redeposited chalk layer was recorded in the section of the manhole at the southern side of Farmyard 2. This may have represented the remains of a former yard surface. [Au(abr)]
