Abstract:
Gives the background to, and describes the structure of the new qualifications (National Vocational Qualifications, or NVQs, in England and Wales; Scottish Vocational Qualifications, or SVQs, in Scotland). The purpose of N/SVQs, to assess competence in work-related tasks based on nationally agreed standards, is outlined and the various levels of competence are explained. Information on how to obtain the awards is given and the respective roles of the 'lead body' (COSQUEC: the Council for Occupational Standards and Qualifications in Environmental Conservation) and the five institutions which will make the awards are discussed.
