Abstract:
The excavation demonstrated that previously identified prehistoric features were in fact medieval in date. Whilst a few prices of prehistoric worked flint were found, there was no evidence of settlement. The most unusual prehistoric find was a Bronze Age side-looped, leaf shaped spearhead. In the medieval period two phases of ponds survived as earthworks and it was suggested that the ponds formed part of a manorial complex. Ridge and Furrow earthworks indicated four fields, with two phases of tracks leading towards the manor. In the post-medieval period a high status settlement was indicated by the find of part of a ceramic 'salt' of early 17th century date. A considerable amount of building had taken place in the mid-19th century, with construction of the majority of the buildings at the Hopgardens Farm; Oakalls Cottage and Slideslow Cottages. The Lickey Incline was constructed, and formed the south-eastern boundary of the development area. Two areas of quarrying which survived as earthwork depressions provided material for the railway embankment. [Au(abr)]
