Abstract:
An aerial photographic assessment of West Nottinghamshire was carried out in order to elucidate remains relating to the early mining industry. The study area was covered by twelve Ordnance Survey 1:10,000 scale quarter sheets. 327 individual areas, each containing up to 65 individual elements, were interpreted and mapped. The density of sites varied between the map sheets, with the highest densities of observed sites centering upon the Broxtowe, Trowell Moor and Strelley areas. The most frequently-observed sites fell into the category of 'former shaft mounds', and probably represented the remains of former bell pits or smaller mining shafts. Distinct patterns of distribution were discernible, which could help to date these extensive areas of former mining. Linear and sinuous features which could have shown the positions of former rail, tram or wagon ways could be seen. Lesser shafts and areas of disturbed ground were also identified, along with definite former spoil heaps and exposed coal seams showing as tonal differences in the topsoil. The survey did not identify many instances of former buildings associated with the mining industry. Mines and spoil heaps which were shown in detail on modern maps, and those which were obviously parts of the 20th century mining industry were not mapped. It was noted that the aerial photographic interpretation should be regarded as a basis for further work in the area, rather than being a 'definitive' statement of its industrial archaeological content.
