Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by WSP Environmental to carry out a programme of archaeological assessment of the site which was being proposed for employment development. While the proposed development site was a golf course, archaeological interest was focussed on an area of approximately 5ha on the southern side of Rooley Lane, hereafter referred to as 'the site'. The site contained a Grade II* 17th century Listed Building (Newhall Hall) which formed the Golf Clubhouse and was believed on the basis of documentary evidence to have been the site of a 13th century monastic grange. It was also likely that the site may have been the focus of an earlier settlement. No evidence of activity or occupation of earlier than medieval in date was found within the site. Buildings were identified in three areas from historic maps. The summary earthwork survey noted ridge and furrow in two areas with old footpaths also recognisable. A flattened area lay on the east of the site with a pronounced (and possible embanked) raised area to the north. The geophysical survey noted several possible archaeological features and areas of ferrous disturbance that may have represented former buildings and/or rubble. The pronounced raised area have may contained evidence for industrial activity. Documentary sources suggested that it was possible that any development entailing groundworks below existing made or disturbed ground may encounter remains of these post-medieval buildings, yards and/or earlier archaeological deposits.
