Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the construction of three town dwellings. The site was formerly occupied by the Old Dairy and its yard and since 1786 had been shown as vacant on maps. In 1845 it was listed as a garden. There was extensive early modern disturbance associated with the construction of the Old Dairy building, a well and a large early modern/modern feature of unknown function was observed. A cultivated layer which probably had its origin in the medieval period was noted and a robbed out wall which could also have been medieval was also observed. The wall was not exactly parallel with High Street, suggesting that it may even had pre-dated the laying out of the town in the late 13th century. [Au(abr)]
