Abstract:
An extensive desk-top assessment was carried out in advance of a major redevelopment. Previous excavation in area A of the site had revealed prehistoric remains, including a ditch or gully, worked flints and pottery. Remains dating from all periods were also noted in the near vicinity. It was concluded that area A had some archaeological potential and that deposits were likely to be endangered by the development. The impact of development in area B was likely to be less major, but the remains of an 18th century mill may have lain on the site. The impact of development in area C would probably be the greatest, although the only surviving remains tentatively expected in this area were the foundations of a 17th century 'Brewe' house. An evaluation strategy of test-pits, trial trenches and auguring was proposed. [AIP]
