Abstract:
A collection of pictorial evidence of Old Ouse Bridge, which was built in 1565 and demolished between 1810 and 1818. The history of the river from Roman times and of the York waterfronts is outlined. As well as a detailed description of the Old Ouse Bridge itself there are accounts of earlier and later bridges, and in particular the medieval bridge which preceded it. The text includes essays on bridges and their construction, and on bridge chapels. There are detailed descriptions of St William's Chapel, the clock, the council chamber, the prisons, and the Maison Dieu, all of which stood on or adjacent to the bridge. The illustrative material is listed chronologically in a gazetteer with details of each illustration including date, title, artist, medium and location. Dodds, Damaris
