Abstract:
Scheduled Monument Consent was received for the excavation of four trenches across the width of the carriageway within the scheduled area. A ragstone rubble construction set within a sandy gravel mortar was observed in three of the four trenches at a depth of between 200 and 300mm below the present road surface. A further five trenches were excavated to the south of the scheduled area with less conclusive results. In only one of these trenches was a ragstone construction recorded at approximately 400mm below the present road surface. No finds were retrieved. [Au(abr)]
