Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches, with associated drainage, for a two-storey building extension. The foundation trenches revealed a sequence of infill layers, alternately chalk with flint and clay. Only in a soakaway trench, at a depth of 1m, were natural deposits, in the form of a layer of peat encountered. The infill layers appeared from the finds to be 18th century at the earliest, perhaps associated with an 18th century extension. The peat may therefore have been the natural surface preceding the 18th century. [Au(abr)]
