Abstract:
There are no historic or statutorily protected buildings directly within the study area. The former Woodhorn Colliery was located to the south of the site within the bounds of Queen Elizabeth Country Park. The colliery became a museum and was a Scheduled Ancient Monument (NMR 32069). The structures on site were of 19th and 20th century date. There was evidence for activity during the prehistoric and Romano-British periods within the landscape around the proposed development area, with the potential for the survival of an as yet unidentified archaeological resource. The focus of the medieval settlement lay on the edge of the proposed development area. Ridge and furrow survived in the vicinity of the study area, and may have survived within it as an undiscovered resource. [Au(abr)]
