Abstract:
A desk-based assessment of a proposed redevelopment site was undertaken. Prehistoric artefacts had occasionally been found in the surrounding area, and the course of a Roman road was adjacent to the site. Roman burials had been excavated in the immediate vicinity. The site lay to the NE of the Middle Saxon settlement, and was first developed in the late 14th century. It was concluded that the basements of the majority of buildings on the site would be too deep for archaeological deposits to have survived, but that a watching brief should take place at 9 New Fetter Lane. An evaluation was recommended at 48-54 Fetter Lane and 3-5 Plough Court. [AIP]
