Abstract:
The line of the new A10 by-pass route ran through undeveloped farmland and occasional woodland. A number of previous archaeological studies had been undertaken of the route, including a brief landscape survey and partial fieldwalking exercise. Sites of various dates from the Late Bronze Age to the medieval had been recorded along the line of and in the immediate vicinity of the route. The present A10, to the west, ran along the line of the Ermine Street Roman road, linking the nearby settlement of Braughing and Ware. The road was also conjectured to have been in use prior to the Roman Conquest, possibly related to the prehistoric sites at Moles Farm and Gatesbury/Skeleton Green. A number of, as yet undated, cropmark sites had also been identified, while stray finds indicated that there was human occupation of Palaeolithic date in the area.
