Abstract:
A concentration of potential archaeological anomalies was detected in the mid-section of the pipeline (Plots 26 & 27), and comprised small groups of ditch-type anomalies and some possible pits, perhaps indicating settlement. Some very weak responses were also noted further north (Plot 19) and appeared to have a rectilinear distribution. However, natural anomalies combined with ploughing striations could also have caused such a response. Many of the survey areas showed evidence of more modern farming practices such as drains and ploughing trends. In some areas there were enhancements within these trends, though it was difficult to define whether the plough had disturbed naturally more magnetic "pockets" of soil, or whether it had cut through an archaeological feature. Recent interventions such as pipes and services were very apparent in a large number of the plots and the associated strong, broad responses could have been masking weaker archaeological anomalies.
