Abstract:
A trench for a new heating-duct was archaeologically excavated during restoration work as the site represents the earliest known chamber block in England, dating from the 13th century. Dendrochronological dating suggested that timbers used in the site's construction were felled in 1282 and 1284. Two phases of floor and a padstone for a central samson-post were revealed by the excavation, although these could not be closely dated. AIP SMR Primary Record Numbers: 15244
