Abstract:
An aerial photographic assessment of the proposed site of a motorway service station identified that it lay within a former industrial landscape of considerable historic interest. Mine workings and associated spoil heaps and access ways were visible in the vicinity, and extensive remains of former bell pits and mine shafts lay in the area. Traces of medieval or post-medieval ridge and furrow also lay to the south. An extensive spread of small circular shaft-heads lay within the northern part of the proposal site, and an area of bell pits lay partially within it at its extreme southern edge. It was noted that the shafts were probably present as extant or collapsed and infilled holes in the ground. [AIP]
